Oil and Gas Exploration

Quantec’s technologies and geophysical services integrate well with other data, and serve as an excellent complement to seismic data.

Are There Times When 3D Seismic Data Isn’t Enough?

From time to time, 3D seismic data relays ambiguous results. Using Quantec’s Orion 3D  technology the oil and gas industry can see the subsurface without a reliance on seismic data. Quantec’s geophysical surveys can image areas where seismic is unable to accurately measure the density difference between resources.

When seismic delivers incomplete results, or is cost-prohibitive, like petroleum exploration clients in the Neuquen Basin, Quantec’s technologies define reliable drill targets. That’s because with Orion 3D, Quantec delivers a complementary data set to seismic and at a lower cost.

What True 3D Acquisition Offers The Oil And Gas Industry

As a complementary data set to seismic, Quantec’s geophysical services combine all project data you have (such as geological and well log information) to give you the most complete and precise picture of the subsurface. Orion 3D is an electrically based DCIP & MT (magnetotelluric) system making it easy to:

  • Penetrate permafrost and volcanic cover to retrieve geological measurements.
  • Identify variance between resources when seismic’s density-difference images cannot.
  • Discriminate between bitumen and water to maximise heavy oil recovery and reduce steam requirements with Orion 3D’s high-resolution images.
  • Pinpoint the hydrocarbon-bearing shale layer for drilling based on detailed resistivity measurements of shale formations.

The 3D and 4D difference models Quantec creates helps oil and gas companies understand where to set up the drill rig; determine which pathways are best for drill results; and to pinpoint the depth at which the resource occurs. So you can:

  • See everything that is around the resource, thief zones included.
  • Know how far back the resource extends instead of just how deep – unlike traditional geophysical surveys.
  • Track the deposit change over time.

As the heavy oil industry continues to gain momentum, Orion 3D’s high-resolution DCIP & MT (magnetotelluric) images of the subsurface maximise oil recovery and reduce steam requirements. By measuring the resistivity difference between water, bitumen and rock, Quantec can pinpoint the location of bitumen versus water. Orion 3D collects more data than any other geophysical survey in the world improving image detail and making Quantec’s inversions more precise. Plus, by integrating with all data sets Quantec creates comprehensive models, thereby increasing confidence in reservoir management for petroleum clients.

Why Does Seismic Struggle To Establish Heavy Oil Drill Targeting?

The difference between oil density and water density after SAGD injection is too close to get an accurate reading from seismic, which can only measure density difference. Instead, with the greatest accuracy in the industry, Quantec isolates oil from water with resistivity measurements (using magnetotelluric methods) helping you:

  1. Determine the underlying water strata to detail the interface between the water/bitumen mixtures.
  2. Identify thief zones so you can see which obstacles are preventing SAGD from working more efficiently.
  3. Track the bitumen interface over time through 4D differencing models to identify changes within the reservoir and maximise recovery percentage.

As oil and gas exploration moves beyond traditional areas, there are times when 3D seismic data collection can be unreliable:

  • Identifying bitumen versus water in petroleum exploration for more energy-efficient heavy oil recovery
  • Targeting hydrocarbon-bearing-shale-formations in relation to shale gas exploration
  • Imaging the geology underneath permafrost and volcanic cover

Without the right technology, oil and gas exploration projects are even more expensive in these new destinations.

From 50°C below to 50°C above: Quantec’s Technologies Work In All Conditions And Climates.

Exploration in All Climates

Quantec helps oil and gas companies increase exploration success no matter what challenges lie in your geological landscape. Lightweight and robust, Quantec’s technologies prioritise safety and are functional in all climates, across any terrain.

Acquisition and inversion techniques, such as magnetotellurics (MT), enable oil and gas clients to create cost-effective drill programs based on precise drill targeting. World-experienced Quantec geophysicists use sensitive 3D DCIP & MT (magnetotelluric) acquisition methods to gather more data (omni-directional) than any other geophysical service provider. Next, the data is inverted into a high-resolution 3D image enabling easy drill program design and significant cost savings on unnecessary drilling.

When Would The Oil And Gas Industry Want Quantec Orion 3D Technology?

Orion 3D has proven to be especially effective for oil and gas exploration during the following conditions:

  • Heavy Oil:  maximise oil recovery with less energy using high-resolution DCIP & MT images of the bitumen/water interface.
  • Permafrost stops seismic from seeing investment potential in vast, cold landscapes. In remote areas, drilling a well is even more expensive than usual. But Quantec’s technologies penetrate permafrost to provide detailed resistivity images for cost-effective drill targeting.
  • Shale Gas: Orion 3D targets the layer within shale that contains hydrocarbons encouraging better drill core results.
  • Volcanic cover prevents seismic from giving a reliable image. Orion 3D sees through volcanic layers to show you what resources lie beneath.

Plus, Orion 3D/4D differential models can identify changes in resource deposits so the lifetime value of a site is easily discovered.
